I used to think that cutting edge ministry had to do with loud, rhythmic music, intelligent lights and cool videos with relevant messages. I used to believe that the best thing I could do for the kingdom of God would be to join a dynamic church, attend as many conferences as I could pay for and rack up a full library of books on missional living and rethinking church. My views on cutting edge ministry have been shifting as I have continued leading and serving 18 to twentysomethings. But within t…

Dear ACCESS218,
We need your help! The company that distributes the "Yellow Pages" in the Netherlands has an action where charities can be nominated, and those with most nominations will get some money for a concrete project. As it happens our washing machine has broken down. The costs for a new one are 4500 Euro; about the amount the Dutch "Yellow Pages" are giving away.
So can you help us, by nominating us? To do this you follow this link: http://mijngoededoel.detelefoongids.nl/goeddoel/inde…

Hey everyone. I recently pondered what to do with my wedding dress (I'm sure nobody else wants it, and my kids will probably think it's hideous by the time they are old enough to get married...) I made a joke about "Trash the Dress" (meaning, getting a photo shoot of me rolling around in the mud or flinging paint all over myself in my (not cheap) wedding dress...) Greg Stritch (Captain Haiti Missionary Man) overheard and pleaded with me to not do it (which I had no intention of doing it anyway..…

It's late...but I am buzzing with thoughts right now...
First, I would encourage you to read my personal blog post on
Calling. Then read further...
Jesus says in Luke 10:27, 'love your neighbor'. Obviously, the call to love and reach to our neighbors is a major theme in scripture. We do not always feel gifted to reach and love our neighbors, but we do have a responsibility towards them. And yes, our neighbors are the folks in Haiti,…

A Time for Everything: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
2 a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
3 a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embrac…

Another Sunday, another day to walk, not run, to dress in uncomfortable clothing, and even more uncomfortable shoes, in the uncomfortable quietness of God’s day. The little girl could not jump or play or pick flowers. She saw an old dog, standing with his head bowed and eyes closed. She stopped and whispered, “Poor old fellow, have you got religion, too?”

Tonight I watched a movie about the life and ministry of Dietrich Bonhoeffer during world war two. This film depicted the way Bonhoeffer reached out to his fellow man, risking his life to do so. Jesus says in John 15:13 that "There is no greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Like Jesus, Bonhoeffer had to endure suffering for remaining steadfast in following God. Bonhoeffer continually risked his life for the Jewish people. The movie depicts how he would pray acr…

On Following Bad Leaders...
So this past Tuesday Night, I did my best to make a case that the key to where you wanna be, need to be, feel called to be and dream to be is leadership. (The foundation for this thought is rooted in Eph 4...that Christ gave us leaders for the equipping of the saints and the building of the body.) I am sure there were many opinions in support and in opposition of the thought. We can dig into that over coffee at some point. The thing I wanted to address here on the co…

So I had an unsettling shift in thinking this week. As Haiti gets closer to being my "present tense" as it were, the thought came into my mind, "I have absolutely no inkling what will come after Haiti." And I had to rein in my mind from having a freak out.
As I processed that realization, I realized that it is (obviously) okay not to know what will come next, especially since the Haiti time frame is a little open-ended. And hey, I do know some big picture ideas for later, but those don't really…

So tonight's message for those of you who were not there based around Joshua Chapter 5.
This message was convicting in so many ways. Something that really stuck out was when Derrick talked about the three types of Christians according to some pastor who lives in Oklahoma (these are paraphrased):-the type of Christian who is happy about the benefits of being a Christian -the type of Christian who is willing to help in a comfortable situation -the type of Christian who is willing to dedicate thei…

Hey A218,
My name is Liz McCafferty and I am the Youth Director at CrossRoad Church! I am seeing if anyone in A218 has a heart for youth ministry and would like to volunteer with our youth?! We have some spots open for volunteers and I remember when I was in A218 and getting involved with the youth ... what a difference it made in my life (being a mentor, etc.) and also in the lives of the youth I served!
Please let me know if anyone is interested by e-mailing me: liz@crcumc.org or give me a c…

Volunteering is something I have done often but not always with consistency. Since I have moved to Jacksonville, I have felt called to get involved with the community around me. I'm blessed to have a good job, place to live, food to eat, and friends to support me. I just wanted to tell you about an upcoming volunteer event. It is with the Methodist Children's Village and it will be on July 25, 2009.
The daycare is a certified United Way agency and a mission of the Methodist church. It currently…

I think I only blog when I should be doing other things. Like studying. For my Finance test tomorrow. Yuck.
Here is something I heard today:
“Your past does not define you, it refines you.” - Jason Burns
So that’s what got me thinking. I mean, it’s true I think. I am not defined by my past (mistakes or otherwise), but rather I am made better because of my past, because of the things I went through and experienced and the choices I made – I have learned and grown and overcome, wh…

So this blog will be unorganized, but its how my thoughts are spilling out of my brain right now. I want to start by saying that everyone should read the book Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. Great book. He is telling a story he heard about some navy SEALS who are resuing hostages, but when they bust into the hostages holding cell they are terrified and don't believe that the SEALS are really americans to help them. So one of the seals puts down his gun takes off his helmet and curls up on the g…

So I would like to tell everyone first off that Anna is feeling better, and thanks everyone so much for their continued prayer support. She hopes to be back in jax this weekend. Praise God!
I have been thinking a lot lately about prayer, and it sort of brought me back to our coffee with Jesus segment last year. I feel like in my life, while I have been getting better about including God in all aspects of my like, there are still times when I don't go to Him first. I don't know if I feel like its…
