I used to think that cutting edge ministry had to do with loud, rhythmic music, intelligent lights and cool videos with relevant messages. I used to believe that the best thing I could do for the kingdom of God would be to join a dynamic church, attend as many conferences as I could pay for and rack up a full library of books on missional living and rethinking church. My views on cutting edge ministry have been shifting as I have continued leading and serving 18 to twentysomethings. But within t…

It's late...but I am buzzing with thoughts right now...
First, I would encourage you to read my personal blog post on
Calling. Then read further...
Jesus says in Luke 10:27, 'love your neighbor'. Obviously, the call to love and reach to our neighbors is a major theme in scripture. We do not always feel gifted to reach and love our neighbors, but we do have a responsibility towards them. And yes, our neighbors are the folks in Haiti,…

On Following Bad Leaders...
So this past Tuesday Night, I did my best to make a case that the key to where you wanna be, need to be, feel called to be and dream to be is leadership. (The foundation for this thought is rooted in Eph 4...that Christ gave us leaders for the equipping of the saints and the building of the body.) I am sure there were many opinions in support and in opposition of the thought. We can dig into that over coffee at some point. The thing I wanted to address here on the co…

From what I can tell, the idea of church shopping (and hopping) is not biblical. It isn't that the idea and/or the action is anti-biblical. It actually is not in there...it didn't exist for the first generations of Christ-followers. The New Testament Church didn't have to deal with the issue of church shopping because for their context, there was only one church...one universal body of believers represented in localized communities. There was fall out, boring sermons, people feeling left out, fa…

For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. Hebrews 10:36
Just a quick thought before I head to midnight study at UNF. So many of us are waiting on God to do what we believe He is going to do in our lives. But I wonder how many times we wait for the promise to actually do what God wants us to do.
I hate to admit it...but my mode of operation is, God when you do it, I'll do it. I love the challenge in the above scripture. There is…

I am taking a bit of a different spin on A218 Lent Question # 11. This season is so much about what is happening in the inner life.
So today seemed to be a great day overall. Relevant moments at church, great meetings, had some significant conversations with friends...the walking around, being around people, conversation, getting work done part of my day was great. But on the inside, in the place that I rarely talk about in public and only certain people are allowed to see, today was not so goo…

Does guilt keep you from living the life you were created for?
Yes...because I know that subconsciously I am capable of just about anything. One of my biggest fears is that deep down below the surface is a proud, arrogant, insensitive jerk and that all of my conscious actions, no matter how good they look, are products of a hopelessly sinful man. There is good psychology and theology that affirms the thought. So I am the person who questions and doubles checks every motive a million time…

This is from Chris Seay at Ecclesia Church in Houston, TX. Chris inspires me often with his thoughtful observance of the Christian year. Hope this challenges and informs how you will enter into Lent.
Brothers and Sisters,
I wanted to speak to you about our Lenten journey and invite you to join me on my Lenten fast. But first let me share with you two concerns that I have observed in previous years as we journey through lent.
1) Lent is not a Death March to Easter - The sacrifice of Jesus t…

Wednesday begins the annual observance of Lent in the Western Christian Church. I am especially looking forward to this season. I think the Spirit of Christ is leading me into this season as Jesus was led into the wilderness (Mark 1:12). Traditionally, people have observed the season of Lent with fasting. Sometimes, people are really intense about their fasting (bread and water diets and such). Others (like me) choose certain things that may seem trivial to others (chocolate, carbonated drinks,…
