It's late...but I am buzzing with thoughts right now...
First, I would encourage you to read my personal blog post on
Calling. Then read further...
Jesus says in Luke 10:27, 'love your neighbor'. Obviously, the call to love and reach to our neighbors is a major theme in scripture. We do not always feel gifted to reach and love our neighbors, but we do have a responsibility towards them. And yes, our neighbors are the folks in Haiti, in Amsterdam, in Asia, and in Sydney (and also in Cambridge, Cuba, Angola, Alaska, Bolivia, Hong Kong and Darfur.) But our neighbors are also those who live a few steps away from where we live AND the people we regularly cross paths with. In fact, looking at the neighbor moment in context (see Luke 10), our neighbors are specifically those who live in our area but (for many reasons) we know little about.
So...who is your neighbor? Do you think you are called to them? If not, why not?
Finally, the challenge is this...you can't love God and not love your neighbor...ALL of your neighbors. I am convinced that for our generation, it might be easier for us to love our neighbors across the pond than across the hall or street. I am convicted by this...I say I love God, but I got neighbors all around me...and they are not feeling the love.
Feel free to respond...but feel compelled to live differently...
Good night...
